Wrestler of Year hits most goals

By Dave Shelburne, Staff Writer

Eric Timson, the Daily News Wrestler of the Year for the Antelope Valley, accomplished nearly everything he aimed for during his 47-7 senior season at Antelope Valley High.

The Antelopes' four-year starter and three-year captain, competing at 140 pounds, won his first individual Golden League championship and Southern Section Central Division title and reached the semifinals of the Masters Meet to qualify for his first appearance in the state championships.

Timson came within one win of a medal at the state meet, rallying after a first-round loss to win four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket and reach the second day of competition.

His two losses at the state championship came against wrestlers who went on to win medals.

Alfonso Sanchez of McLane of Fresno, who entered the tournament ranked No. 5 in the state and pinned Timson in the final five seconds of their first-round match, finished third. Vinny Maraj of Yucca Valley, who ended Timson's state run with a 4-2 decision, finished seventh.

Timson's team contributions helped the Antelopes achieve league and section honors.

He delivered the win that launched a comeback from a 15-point deficit in their Golden title-clinching tiebreaker victory over 12-time league champion Highland, which had lost just one league match in the previous 13 years.

Timson then went 4-0 in the Southern Section Div. V Dual Meet finals to help

A.V. reach the title match for the first time in its history. The Antelopes lost to Royal of Simi Valley in the final.
