LITTLEROCK - Parents who would like to help their children
gain confidence, learn discipline and
acquire self-defense skills may want to consider classes offered by America's
Youth Outreach Programs.
The nonprofit San Diego-based agency offers its youth
self-defense class and safety awareness program

for children 5 and older Saturdays at Jackie Robinson Park,
8775 East Ave. R.

A new 11-week course is scheduled to begin Saturday, Jan. 19,
and it will run through Saturday,

March 29. Students in the class will learn the discipline of tae kwon do.
The cost for the program is $7 per week, plus a $5 registration fee.
AYOP founder and CEO Stephen Eakins said the program provides a way for some parents to get their
children involved in activities they otherwise might not be able to afford.
"We try to bring high-cost programs at a low cost to kids," he said.
Eakins, who founded the group about 16 years ago, said children who participate in the programs get more
in return than just martial arts skills.
They can improve their confidence and develop their self-esteem and respect for others while enhancing their
coordination and physical fitness, Eakins said.
"I think we're doing good work with all these kids," said program director Tomas Shmauz.
"A lot of parents can't afford these expensive karate programs," Shmauz said. "If you have one child, usually the karate studio charges $80 a month. We only charge $7 a week."
Parents who would like to enroll more than one child also are eligible for a discount.
Shmauz said the classes focus on discipline and respect for parents and teachers and also stress the importance of homework.
AYOP offers classes throughout Southern California, teaching about 6,000 boys and girls each week. Most of its programs in other cities focus on karate. Some areas offer cheerleading. Tae kwon do is offered in the Antelope Valley because that is the only discipline for which an instructor is available, Shmauz said.
He said the classes at Jackie Robinson Park are generally smaller than in other communities, which allows the instructor to spend more time with the children.
Parents also are welcome to join their children in class for $3.50 a week instead of the regular $7 cost.
"We want to encourage parents to kind of participate instead of just sitting there watching," Shmauz said.
Eakins said there are plans to add classes in January in Palmdale.
