Desert Marksmen 20th Annual Rendezvous -

Kentucky Springs Canyon in the Angeles National Forest

Mountain men and women from the Antelope Valley, throughout Southern California and as far as Oregon will gather this week at the Desert Marksmen 20th Annual Rendezvous at Kentucky Springs Canyon in the Angeles National Forest.

The gathering celebrates the life of the pre-1840's. It begins today and runs through Sunday.

The Rendezvous features black-powder rifle and pistol shooting, archery and tomahawk throwing and other authentic aspects of mountain-man life, as well as vendors.

"If you want to enjoy living history, it's totally different than what people think," said Jackie Landan, the club secretary for the Desert Marksmen Rifle and Pistol Club.

While the Rendezvous is held at a shooting range, not all the participants are involved for shooting.

People are attracted to different aspects of recreating life from the hayday of the American fur trade, from 1810 to 1840.

Landan, who has attended every Rendezvous, was initially attracted by her interest in camping.

"It's the interaction with people," Landan said. "It's the enjoyment of the community of people. I totally enjoy that."

For Dave Ozment, the discipline leader for black powder at the rifle and pistol club, it was his interest in black-power firearms that partially attracted him to the Rendezvous

"For me, it's doing things of that period," Ozments said. "It's camping in the 1840s. It's shooting in the 1840s. It's also the history aspect of it. There are some people that just like to shoot black powder and they're not really into camping and history. It's really a wide variety.

"Some people come out and their favorite thing is archery. Some people like the history. Some like the camping and the peace and quiet and there are no generators."

Some enthusiasts delve deeper into the history of the period and not all adhere strictly to using only period-authentic items.

"We don't all forgo modern conveniences," Landan said. "I have my queen-size bed in my tent."

Landan said one of her favorite activities is cooking over an open fire using a dutch oven.

"I make an entire meal off a wood stove," Landan said. "I can cook biscuits off a dutch oven. What you can do in a modern kitchen, you can do outdoors."

Landan is looking forward to Friday's highlight, a potluck diner.

"Last year, there were more variations of chili than you can imagine," Landan said. "This year, there will be variations of beans and ham."

Landan began camping at the range in the Angeles National Forest on Saturday.

"Hopefully the weather will stay nice," Landan said. "It was cold (Wednesday) morning. My water pump froze."

The Rendezvous had four-inches of snow last year, although it didn't stick.

The highlight for Ozment is the Dave Bell Memorial Stake Shoot, where teams of two to four people try to shoot a wooden 4x4 in half.

The contest is named after a former member of the Desert Marksmen.

"People are shooting very quickly, there's a lot of smoke," Ozment said. "Sometimes it's as short as a minute and can be as long as 10 minutes."

Another big draw are the mountain men and women competitions.

There is an entrance fee, $20 for adults, $30 per couple, $8 for kids 11- to 16-years old, $65 maximum per family and day visitors $5 per car.

Ozment said the Rendezvous has drawn anywhere from 50 to 200 people.

Ozment said the economy, specifically gas prices, and the weather can affect turnout.

"I liked it when it snowed," Ozment said. "It was fine by me. That's part of it. Part of the period is dealing with the elements."
