The crowd at Desert Sands Park cheered as horses ran around barrels and chased after cattle.
Cowboy hats, jeans and boots were worn by a majority of the crowd and participants.
The smell of dung lingered in the early morning air and grew stronger as the day went on, but spectators and competitors alike didn't seem to mind. Their eyes and ears were set on the horses inside the arena.
Boys and girls guided their horses through poles and barrels as fast as they could, making sure not to knock any down. The sounds of "He-ya" and "Whoa" can be heard from the riders.
Barrels and poles were knocked down with a penalty of five seconds to the riders' time.
Disapointment could be seen on the riders face after knocking down poles and barrels, but words of encouragement would come from the sides.
Ropes could be seen twirling in the air. Dust went floating in the air as the steer were chased around the ring.
There were cries of anguish and frustration as the steers were roped and thrown to the ground.
The ways of the old cowboys are still enforced in today's world of rodeo.
"We all live on ranches, so the things that we do aren't just for fun," said Cheryl Lutge-Stephens. "These are all things that are done to take care of the animals."
Children had smiles on their face as they received ribbons and trophies for their performances.
Though some went home knowing they hadn't performed their best, they will get another chance at the next monthly Antelope Valley Rodeo Association rodeo.
