Three Lancaster teenagers became Junior National Champions in Judo on Saturday,
July 9th, while a fourth local student, Mark Cagalawan, won a silver medal.
Carleigh Hobson, a standout basketball player at Desert Christian High School, duplicated her win at last year�s championships in Hawaii. Jeffrey Merrill, an outstanding wrestler at Lancaster High School, and Roxanne Neely, a 15 year old Junior at Lancaster High School and a varsity volleyball player, returned on Sunday, July 10th to again win a gold medal against competitors aged 20 and under. Hobson and Neely led the California team to victory in the State Teams Competition Sunday afternoon. Neely is now the 8th ranked adult judoka at 70 kg in the United States. Another AV student, Pauline Macias, is the 11th ranked adult at 63 kg. Macias won a gold medal at the U.S. High School Judo Championships and was rewarded with a trip to Japan.
The Antelope Valley Judo Club has become one of the dominant teams in the United States and is gaining national and international recognition for the Antelope Valley.
