Huge Loss - Judo Great - Steve Bell - Gone - 10/23/06

Steve Bell suffered a massive heart attack Sunday and died today.

The martial arts world and world judo have lost a great competitor

and friend.

No one worked harder to promote American Judo in recent years

than Steve Bell. He produced a number of junior national champions

and was a positive influence in the lives of many Antelope Valley

residents for the past fifteen years.

His loss is a tremendous tragedy for his family, friends,

students, and the Judo world.

Almost 70 Family and Friends attended a Thanksgiving Service for "The Life and Love "of Stephen Bell on Saturday December 2nd at Kingswinford Methodist Church in the UK.

Steve's Mother Margaret, His Sister Janine and His Son Scott, who all attended the "Celebration of Stephen's Life"  in Saugus, were there to welcome the Guests.

In addition to his UK family, many of Steve's old school friends, Mate's from his youth and several members of Wolverhampton Judo Club attended. Tributes from these, and others who could not be there, were read during the Service, and copies of the many tributes posted on the Web Sites of AV Judo and Judo Forum, were displayed at the Social Gathering that followed.

The Service was conducted be Rev Stuart Davis and the tributes were read by Stephen's Step Father, David Towner.

The highlight of a moving and memorable occasion was undoubtedly the playing of a song, specially recorded for the occasion, by Stephens long time friend Rue Philips who emigrated to America with him in the 80's and now lives at Seal Beach.

Rue's Song was titled "I Can Only Imagine"

Stephen's Mother, Margaret, wishes to say thank you to all the Members of AV Judo for the Love and Friendship that you gave to her Son.

A welcome

The King of love my Shepherd is,
Whose goodness faileth never,
I nothing lack if I am his
And he is mine forever.

Where streams of living water flow
My ransomed soul he leadeth,
And where the verdant pastures grow
With food celestial feedeth.

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
But yet in love he sought me,
And on his shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.

In death’s dark vale I fear no ill
With Thee, dear Lord, beside me;
Thy rod and staff my comfort still,
Thy cross before to guide me.

Thou spread’st a table in my sight;
Thy unction grace bestoweth;
And O what transport of delight
From thy pure chalice floweth!

And so through all the length of days
Thy goodness faileth never;
Good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise
Within thy house forever.

Remembering Stephen

Prayers of thanksgiving

Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us

O’er the world’s tempestuous sea;

Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,

For we have no help but thee,

Yet possessing every blessing

If our God our Father be.

Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us;

All our weakness thou dost know;

Thou didst tread this earth before us,

Thou didst feel its keenest woe;

Tempted, taunted, yet undaunted,

Through the desert thou didst go.

Spirit of our God, descending,

Fill our hearts with heavenly joy,

Love with every passion blending,

Pleasure that can never cloy;

Thus provided, pardoned, guided,

Nothing can our peace destroy.

(Hi Mr. Neely this is Cory Bell, Steve's son and I would like to know how to post a message.(as follows))

                         To every one who loved and respected my father. On behalf of Liam, William, me(Cory), I just wanted to say thank you. I just got the courage to look at the web site and we appreciate all of the support. We would like to say to everyone that we are holding up we miss him much and it was a tragedy. But for my family and my brother Liam I must stay strong. Plus, dad wasn't the type to "mope", as he would put it. He worked hard and loved all of his students and would love most for us to remember the great man he was and forever will be. To all our friends at AV JUDO and in WOLVERHAMPTON, we shall see each other again and thank you for every thing.

LOVE YOU DAD!!! ALWAYS!!! MISS YOU!
                               Sincerly,

                               Cory Bell

Thank you for replying to my e mail.  I have seen the tributes to Stephen and have been amazed by them. I didn't realize he was so well thought of by so many people. Thank you for your condolences to myself and my mum,  I have passed them on to her.

This is the message I would like to add to your message board.

On behalf of Stephen's family in England, I would like to thank the many of you who have wanted to express your sadness for the loss of my brother Stephen. I can't begin to tell you the profound sense of loss that we feel right now but it is a comfort to feel that this is shared by others who have known him.

My brother never did anything by halves and lived life to the full.  One of his overriding passions throughout his life has been judo.  As a youngster he lived and breathed it and I am sure this energy came through in his teaching to the many young people he trained.  Inspirational people offer motivation and encouragement to others because they love what they do and I know Stephen felt this way about the club and people he supported. I only hope that you will continue on without him.  By going on and developing further is a long lasting tribute to his efforts.

We all have many varied memories of him but I think one that is common to all is that he was a loved and respected person held in high esteem by those who knew him.
God Bless Stephen  all our love Janine , Mum and the family.

I had a look at your website and saw many pictures of Stephen with his family. I am Stephen's sister and would like to add a message to the tribute board from me and my mum in England. I don't know how to go about it and wonder if you can tell me how I could do this. Stephen's death has left our family bereft and I would like to show our respect by paying him tribute through his judo web site.

Many Thanks and hope you can help

I would be most grateful if whoever receives this e-mail would convey the message to Teri.

Teri & Family

Sincere and heartfelt condolences and sympathy to you all at your sad and tragic loss from the Coaches, the Committee and all of Steve's friends at Wolverhampton Judo Club but in particular from myself, Dave Brooks, Bill Kelly and Kevin O,Reilly. We have all known Steve since he was just a lad and although separated by distance he was still an integral part of Wolverhampton Judo Club. Steve's sudden demise has left a gap that will be impossible to fill and he will be sadly missed by us all.

Our thoughts are with you all at this sad time and indeed will be in the future.

Sincere Regards

Mac Abbotts

I Thought you might like to see the invitation to a celebration for the life of Steve which Mac

asked me to post on the website. I don't know who David Towner is but Mac seems to.

The service is at Kingswinford which is a few miles from Wolverhampton so it shows how

well known Steve was.

Also I took a picture of a photo of Steve that is on the notice board at the new club premises.

I just thought you may like a copy. It was taken when Steve won the Gold Medal at the

Scottish Open when he was just a lad. I am not absolutely sure of the year but I think it

was around 1976 when he was just 16.

Best wishes to Teri and family from everyone at the club.

Regards

Lionel Cartlidge

It is with great regret that we have lost a great coach and friend in Steve Bell. He started his judo career at Wolverhampton Judo Club in England and he had many great moments and success whilst at the club. He then moved to the US and formed Antelope Valley Judo Club. To this very day Wolverhampton Judo Club and Antelope Valley Judo Club still work in partnership and arrange exchange visits and have officially twinned the clubs together. We wish to send our deepest sympathy to his wife Teri and family and all the members of Antelope Valley Judo Club.

Regards - Mac, Dave, Kevin, Bill, all at Wolverhampton Judo Club and his friends in Great Britain. RIP.

Hello Terri,

I just got a call this evening from Louis Vuong telling us of the news. We have moved up to Klamath Falls Oregon last year but I have been commuting back and forth for some time, trying to tie up some loose business ends I had.

Shon was in disbelief as were we all. Shon thought Steve was invincible, he had so much respect for him. I know everyone must have the same things to say, but Steve had such an impact on Shon. Kids today have a ton of negative influences, but Steve and the Judo club were so positive and so influential on those kids at such an impressionable stage of their lives.

Shon brags continually of his coach and how “ BAD ” he was….. and how hard his practices were etc…. The life lessons and success Shon achieved at AV Judo will be with him for the rest of his life. Evidence of the many trophies Steve helped Shon win, and are proudly displayed in his bedroom.  The dedication to those kids and the sport will be with us forever.

We pray for you, in this time of need, and hope you are comforted by God, Family and friends.

AV Judo will always be fondly remembered.

God Bless,

Chuck, Florinda, Shon & Matthew
